The music industry discards...where do they go from here?
The Bollywood music industry has its very own unique way of effortlessly forgetting the passe and kicking out the unwanted. And once, discarded, these discards are never welcomed back.
Even if they try to force their way through they end up as the laughing stock in town. The Bitch takes a look at a few of them.
Kumar Sanu-aka Kedar Bhattacharya had the music directors and big filmmakers eating out of his palms in the nineties. He got a yet unbroken 5 back to back Best Male Singer Filmfare award wins to his name. But then with the emergence of new age singers such as Sonu Nigam, KK, Shaan and Zubin who became the favourite of popular music directors, he had to almost leave his singing profession to produce films. Well he wasn‘t a success there either with the flopping of his maiden venture ‘Utthan‘, a B grader starring Neha Dhupia (surprisingly unexposed throughout the film!). Last heard, he has given a full stop to his production plans and has started making rounds of music studios meeting up music directors and filmmakers hoping to regain the past glory. But sadly, no one‘s interested in him anymore and nobody is even assuring him any work!
Suresh Wadkar-He has been one of the most classically correct singers of the music industry and had got to sing a good number of songs in his hey days. But today no one wishes to have him in their films. Apparently he‘s considered a ‘panvati‘ by filmmakers who feel, if he sings in their films, they will flop miserably. Also there are certain limitations in his voice and it doesn‘t suit the younger generation of stars. This has become a big deterrent for him! Nowadays he is earning his daily bread and butter by appearing as a judge on music reality shows and by running the music school, the land for which was granted to him at a very cheap price thanks to his state government connections!
Bappi Lahiri- The walking talking jewellery shop was once famously insulted by the late whimsical actor Raj Kumar at a film bash. Bappi had arrived at the party donning his usual 10 kg gold jewellery and Raj Kumar then going up to him had said, "Jaani lag to tum khoob rahi ho…bas ek mangalsutra ki kami hai!" Instead of leaving the industry there and then after this big insult, Bappi continued to make music copied from Hollywood tunes but soon filmmakers realized there are better thieves than him in the industry who come cheaper! Well presently, he is busy making an ass out of himself by judging reality shows and trying to promote his equally untalented son to filmmakers who once made the mistake of taking him in their films.
Sadhana Sargam- She was teaching singing to upcoming singers at Suresh Wadkar‘s music school and soon graduated to singing in films. With very limited hits in her kitty she never made it big. Reportedly, her contemporary rival singer, Alka Yagnik made sure she was never given a chance and hijacked all the songs she was going to get. Interestingly, all those whom she taught singing like Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Goshal are big names in the Bollywood music industry now whereas Sadhana is fast approaching the tag of a has been! She is presently at home waiting for opportunities to drop in, which the Bitch feels is not going to happen for a long long time!
Kunal Ganjawala- He may have rocked the nation with his "Bheege honth tere" number but soon his typical style became common place and repetitive. He started sounding the same in all his songs and everyone got bored of hearing him sing. KK took over as a perfect substitute for him with his versatility and Kunal has since then been twiddling his thumbs sitting at home. His private albums which came after the super hit Channa Ve never managed to capture the same glory. Nowadays he is busy preparing for shows abroad and trying to earn moolah from his old hits! His wife, the beautiful, Gayatri Iyer is earning a lot more with her acting and singing career! The Bitch guesses there‘ll be a ‘Abhimaan‘ like situation in their household very soon!
