They certainly don't make fortunes turn around for films anymore
The year 2008 is almost half over now and it‘s high time The Bitch analyses a few important Bolly trends. One look at this year‘s films with item songs in them and The Bitch notices that both - the films and their item numbers have flopped miserably. So have the ticket paying public finally smartened up enough, to not accept the bait of an item number incorporated by the makers anymore? The Bitch takes a look at the downfall of the item number in 2008 and lets you decide...
Rajkumar Santoshi‘s ‘Halla Bol‘ (that released on 11th Jan) had the item number Is Aanewale Pal Kifeaturing Ex-Miss India turned (non) actress Sayali Bhagat. Singing an item song successfully is one thing and bringing out a successful number as a musician is completely another ball game. Hopefully Sukhwinder Singh has realised that after giving this thakela number. The Bitch is still wondering what was colder, the number itself or Sayali‘s expressions!
Released on the same date along with ‘Halla Bol‘ was the E.Niwas directed ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves‘ which had an item song featuring Hrishita Bhatt (trying in vain to look sexy), Ya Babawhich also fell flat on its face like the film.
The same month also had yet another film with an item number, ‘Sunday‘ (25th Jan) directed by Rohit Shetty. The Shibani Kashyap sung, Kya Kashmakash Hai Yeh featured Esha Deol. Shibani had even got the makers to shoot the same number in music video format featuring her. The major problem nowadays with the ‘I‘m 30 plus trying to look 20 singer‘ is that number of hers tends to have the same feel of her biggest claim to fame till date, the Zinda Hoon Mainnumber. This one was no exception either. The film flopped badly at the Box Office and so did this number! But must say the makers of these films displayed some guts! Imagine taking Esha Deol for an item number to seduce the public! Teheeee!
The next item number to hit the screen was Samar Khan‘s ‘Shaurya‘. This followed the ghisa pitatrend of featuring a firang hottie doing a Desi item number. Now the biggest mistake the makers did here was to choose the wrong gori. They got in ‘her mid 30s‘ Rozza (Saif‘s discard) to perform it! The Bitch feels it was perhaps intently put in by the makers to provide audiences some comic relief in this extremely serious themed film. Those few who dared to pay and catch the film were not let down by Rosa as she did entertain, what with her facial expressions, dance movements and song lyrics competing with each other to go out of sync!
The most controversial item number of the year turned out to be the title track of ‘Krazzy 4‘ featuring superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan in two different versions. Well, the copy cat controversy couldn‘t help this number and the film either. The public preferred to watch these numbers on their TV screens on various music channels instead of going to the cinema hall and sitting through the pathetic film.
Neetu Chandra featured in the rustic item song, Baali Mein Sonewaalifor ‘Summer 2007‘ directed by debutante Suhail Tatari. But Bitch doesn‘t know whether the makers purposely presented her in a way where she was beyond recognition. Or was it her true face sans make up that scared everyone away from this song and the film both?
‘Mere Baap Pehle Aap‘ began with the item song of Mumaith Khan (the Dekhle girl from ‘Munnabhai MBBS‘) in a two piece bikini and veteran actor Om Puri running behind her salivating like a doggy. This song Khali Bali was an additional annoyance to an already irritating film!
Last Friday‘s release ‘De Taali‘ featured an item song, Maari Teetri shot on the sets of ‘Jodhaa Akbar‘ in Karjat‘s N.D. Studios. E. Niwas had earlier successfully tried the experiment of featuring a firang hottie (Yana Gupta) with Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo in his ‘Dum‘. But Yana was a well known face by then and had her well endowed assets doing the trick. In Maari Teetri, the virtually unknown firang model, Iryna Alexander just couldn‘t ignite any passion!
The problem is that the makers follow a herd mentality of going blindly behind anything that works once, as it is evident in the case of item numbers. Nowadays either they take the audiences for granted or are extremely overconfident of themselves which make them feel if they slot in an item song and play it repeatedly on music channels it is definitely their lottery ticket to a successful album sell, if not a successful film. But it‘s high time they realise that item songs are a passe now...whaddaya say?
