It's time for Indian fashion reality shows to check their style!
I‘ve been watching two shows with great interest on Channel V and MTV. Not because I love them so much, but because they are connected to fashion.
The first show is ‘Teen Diva‘ on MTV and the second one is ‘Get Gorgeous‘ on V. Both of them are claiming to find the next big model, and a teen diva to represent India on an international scale. But there is a strange fact that is common to both shows. They both lack a basic sense of style. Right from the anchors who host them, to the contestants themselves!
Before I expand on that, let me mention two fashion-related international shows that I love watching. There is ‘America‘s Next Top Model‘ and ‘Project Runway‘. And those personify what style should be. Even though Tyra Banks seems a little larger (well, with her size, quite literally) than life on most episodes, her super model experience reflects through completely. And on ‘Project Runway‘, Heidi Klum‘s charm just shines through. And if you compare our reality TV shows to these, we fall short on many counts.
Let‘ start with ‘Get Gorgeous‘. It aims to find India‘s top model, but it has no top models judging it. Sure there‘s Diandra Soares and Gauhar Khan, but were they ever top notch? I don‘t think so. Secondly, the girls they have chosen are weird to say the least. Either good-looking girls don‘t participate in such a show, or these judges just lack an eye for talent. So there are these gangly, some actually very short, and extremely awkward girls trying to make the cut. And the advice doled out to them is also strange. Don‘t flap your arms -what does that mean- why don‘t you tell them something about cultivating personal style. I don‘t think these girls are gonna make it big.
Much like whoever will be crowned ‘Teen Diva‘ on MTV‘s show. Because out of the girls that have been competing, no one is classy enough to represent India on an international stage. They just don‘t have that zing, that charm, that character. And these girls, young as they are, are not even aware of the F of fashion. How can you be sending them abroad to represent us in a beauty contest?
Really. Even host Anusha Dandekar, who is trying to ape ex or yet boyfriend Rannvijay Singh‘s style from his show Roadies, is so boring you want to fall asleep in the middle of the show. And her clothes - is fashion all about just showing a lot of skin? Anusha seems to think so.
If we take the case of Heidi Klum on Project Runway, you will get a style lesson at once. She wears designer all the time. Her clothes are elegant and dignified. And I am sure a lot of the contestants on that show regard her as their muse.
It‘s because of the way she dresses that she justifies her role as the anchor cum producer of the show. Even the contestants are chosen on the basis of personal style and zing. They all have that special something that sets them apart.
Ditto for the contestants of ‘America‘s Next Top Model‘. They are all albeit a little raw, but yet beautiful and modelsque. They already have 50 per cent of what they need to become models, and Tyra just polishes them to perfection. She herself looks great throughout the show, except one fashion faux pas here or there.
Anyway, if Indian fashion reality shows want to make a difference, they need shape up soon. Or they better get to face another reality:they are out of style.

Am so glad somebody finally speaks out against these so called fashion and style shows. Such a travesty, they don‘t know how to dress and teach us style! Ridiculous! | Annie
i couldn‘t agree with you more about get gorgeous. those chicks are HIDEOUS!..and the show lacks substace BIG time...they‘re so confused it‘s not even funny..just take the show‘s intro for example...why in the worldd would you show blood and gore for a show that‘s all about finding the next big supermodel?i think they got a lil too inspired by roadies 5.0..the intro almost the same thing!
and then there‘s this whole bitchier, naughtier, sexier than ever..how original..clap clap clap....get gorgeous is a total wannabe show...pathetic attempt..real pathetic..its a disgrace to reality tv.. | hater
