Like lots of girls, when I was young, I too wanted to be Miss India. And my Miss India idol was Juhi Chawla, who won the title in 1984.
I remember watching that tape 5 years later- bubbly, charming and pretty- a quintessential Indian girl. And I knew then, if Juhi could do it, I could as well. But I was young then, and as the years went by, everything just changed drastically. If Juhi would even think of taking part today, she would be booed off stage. Why? Well, because she is to short and she is too plump.
And in the era of zero-sizes Kareenas and supermodels Lakshmi Menon, Tamara Moss and others, it just wouldn‘t be taken kindly too. Where is there place for a regular Indian girl with a regular Indian figure? You can‘t blame the fashion industry solely for this. It just sort of trickles down from the international ramps, and if we were to make it abroad, well, we would have to follow their rules. So skinny and tall was the order of the day.
But why are our film actresses going the same way? Shouldn‘t they be immune to all this? Granted, no one should have hips like Asha Parkeh, but Madhuri was fine, wasn‘t she? Shouldn‘t we be proud of what we have -dusky skin, voluptuous bodies and expressive faces. Do you see a Salma Hayek or a Penelope Cruz hiding their bodies? No, we see them flaunting themselves. But not us.
Take Kareena‘s body for instance - I know she can‘t help the pale white complexion, but she could have remained the voluptuous Bebo we saw in movies like ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham‘. In ‘Tashan‘, though she does look good in a bikini, where are the curves, darling? I still remember her sister Karishma in ‘Dil To Pgal Hai‘. She looked curvy as hell and extremely hot. Even if she never had a great face, her body made up for it. It was toned but didn‘t look anorexic. Kareena should learn a lesson from her sister.
Then there is the new Kareena on the block- Amrita Arora. Rumor has it that she is aiming to be even thinner than her best friend Kareena. We wonder why?
Let‘s count down some women who have had voluptuous bodies and have been lusted after by every man in the world. Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce Knowles - they all have bodies that belong to real girls. Model Adrina Lima was even dubbed as ‘The World‘s Most Voluptuous Virgin‘ by US GQ magazine. None of the Bond girls have ever been skinny, and certainly not any of the Victoria Secrets‘ models. And aren‘t they the most gorgeous of them all?
Back home, we have Karishma, Katrina Kaif, Shilpa Shetty and Bipasha Basu, who really set the standard for what a good body is. Why aren‘t we aping them? I am sure these girls have many more suiters than skinny girls Kate Moss, Claista Flockhart, Paris Hilton or Keira Knightley.
Internationally, too, the scene is changing. Many runways have now banned zero-size models form getting on the ramp. It all sparked off after the death of Luisel Ramos, during Uruguay‘s fashion week. The cause of Miss Ramos‘s death was given as heart failure, but her father later claimed that she had been fasting for days. The 22-year-old collapsed while going for a final costume change and died despite the efforts of an emergency team trying to resuscitate her. After her death, stories sprang up that Miss Ramos had been told by a modelling agency she could "make it big" if she lost a "significant" amount of weight. We don‘t wish that fate on anyone.
Do women think men like skinny girls? What do men really find hot? Do they like the skinny girl or the well-rounded girl? Most men I go prefer the latter.
Because men like real girls who feel real when they touch them. If you are naturally thin, it‘s great. But going to crazy lengths to get Kareena‘s figure is not happening. You need to realize that not everyone can look the same. You have to be proud of what you have.
Jog everyday, eat healthy and a fit body will replace any insecurities. And then once you are proud of yourself, flaunt the new you. I promise you the men will stop in their tracks. And women, they will just die. Have fun!

If given a choice, Many men would anyday prefer Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz,Scarlett Johansson, .They are stunners!! ..thumbs up !!!and Kareena can‘t stand near them thumbs down :( | the dark knight
you‘re supposed to be the bitch, so wassup with the nice article? haha just kidding. Great article. i completely agree wiht you. Karisma had one of the best bodies ever, she oculd pull off anything. i hope the curvy body makes a comeback very soon. | Jabina
Am Sorry to say but I don‘t think Kareena is a size 0.With her bone structure? Impossible! She is a size 2. Only petite women like Eva Langoria are size 0, Kareena though very skinny cannot be called petite because of her broad frame. Take a good look at her arms which are quite ‘thick‘, how would those arms fit comfortably into a size 0 short sleeved t-shirt? Just imagine!

It‘s the era of the voluptuous girl
I liked this post. Seriously, I do not understand the furore behind size-0. I think women with curves and substantial assets look a lot better. Why kill urself dieting so hard. Just avoid flabs and make it a point to stay healthy!! :) Thanks for the post.. | Anz
Practice what you preach much??
It‘s ironic that you would write such an impassioned treatise on healthy body image attitudes after referring to Preity Zinta as a ‘charging bear‘ not more than a couple of days ago. Sorry, but I call bullshit on that one. If we‘re looking for someone to blame for the deplorable obsession with being skinny, let‘s all take a collective look in the mirror - especially us women. Maybe if we weren‘t so despicably cruel to each other when it comes to our weight and body image, we wouldn‘t feel the need to starve ourselves or surgically mutilate ourselves in order to meet our own bogus expectations of what beauty is. I‘m 24 years old, and when I think of true beauty in Bollywood, I think of women like Shabana Azmi and Kiron Kher. If I look half as good as either of those women in 30 years, I‘ll consider myself blessed, no matter what size clothes I wear. | tashana
