Even more Moolah! Sounds like music to UTV's ears!

UTV has sold off the music rights of their 20 films in various stages of production to T-Series for a whopping Rs. 27.5 crore. What surprised The Bitch was that just recently in January 2008, UTV with great pomp and show had launched its own label, UTV Music with the music of ‘Jodhaa Akbar‘ at a grand Mumbai hotel. So what‘s up with this latest move?

The Bitch‘s khabroo has revealed to her that the scenario has changed for the sake of the monies, obviously! Since its launch, UTV Music has not managed to get any major music rights of outside production houses. Majority of producers today prefer a T-Series or if their expected deal there fizzles out, then they rush to a SONY Music or a Tips or HMV Saregama or last hope, Junglee Music. UTV Music has nowhere been in the picture. Now UTV has realized that it makes great business sense to sell off their films‘ music rights to the biggest player in the music industry rather then market it themselves considering the super thanda standing they have in the music market!

Out of this Rs 27.5 crore, the movies for UTV that managed to get the highest price include, Salman Khan - Kareena Kapoor starrer ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna‘ with music by Sajid - Wajid (Rs. 6 crore), Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directed and Abhishek Bachchan-Sonam Kapoor starring ‘Dilli 6‘ with music by A.R. Rahman (Rs. 5 crore) Shahid Kapoor starrer ‘Rock Star‘ directed by Ken Ghosh and yet another film starring Shahid (both for Rs 3.5 crore each). Most of the other films are small films compared to the above mentioned names.

This deal has in turn made T-Series the single largest player in the music industry hands down. With big stars turned producers such as Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and even Salman Khan‘s brother Sohail Khan having T-Series as their first choice in today‘s times, this UTV deal further makes their position much stronger.

After all, it‘s all about the money, honey!

The joke in the music industry today is that the amount of moolah and clout, T-Series founder and then head honcho, the late Gulshan Kumar managed to earn in his entire lifetime (that includes the plagiarized versions of popular singers and musical hits), his beta and current head honcho, Bhushan Kumar has managed to earn it in this last one year itself.

This fellow is a smart chap, first the trophy wife now all this glory... some guys do have all the luck!
