Ronit Roy has been the perfect example of the adage, ‘Jack of all trades and master of none‘. He started with acting in movies but couldn‘t make it big and then started his own celebrity security service and finally landed up doing mindless television soaps.
He seems to be one of Ekta Kapoor‘s favourites. After all, he‘s mostly worked in and around the Balaji camp.
And now he‘s bagged the pivotal role of Bhishma in Ekta Kapoor‘s magnum opus, ‘Kahaani Humaray Mahabharat Ki‘. The Bitch decided to catch up with him in his moment of glory.
The Bitch: So, you‘re back to the Balaji camp again. How did this whole ‘Kahaani Humaray Mahabharat ki‘ happen? Ronit: Thanks a lot. Ekta Kapoor approached me for the role and at that time the show was in its early stages. The casting for the roles had just begun. So, I read ‘The Mahabharat‘ and I liked the character of Bhishma a lot and that‘s how it happened. Looks like Ronit forgot to mention the main reason he got the role, apple- polish!
The Bitch: So Ekta actually thought you had the credibility to emulate any character you wanted? Ronit: Yeah, since most of the roles weren‘t decided, I took the liberty of choosing my own character and it worked out pretty fine.
So, that‘s how the casting is done for soaps in the Balaji camp. The first few in the queue will get to play characters like Bhishma and Arjun, while the last few get to play Nakul and Sehdev kinds. Very smart!
The Bitch: Do you think you will be able to play the role as efficiently as Mukesh Khanna did in the original?
Ronit: I haven‘t really seen the original show but I have heard that Mr. Mukesh Khanna had done it quite well. I will try to do justice to the character of Bhishma, but yes those are really big shoes to step into.
Hope he plays the character as efficiently as he plays with his words!
The Bitch: Did you choose the role only because of the banner or was there any other reason too?
Ronit: Of course the Balaji banner has its importance and also the role I am playing is really very challenging. I am really honoured to play such a legendary character. Yeah sure, as if he even cares which character it is as long as it is under the Balaji banner!
The Bitch: Is this going to be the original ‘Mahabharat‘ story or Ekta Kapoor‘s version of the story?
Ronit: Oh, this one is very different. Except the story line, there are a lot of changes. The dramatisation, the look everything is completely different. It‘s going to be one of the biggest shows on Indian Television.
Oh my God! This is going to be an extremely dramatic and emotional ‘Mahabharat‘!
The Bitch: Although, you‘ve done very few movies and a bunch of stupid television shows, which medium do you prefer?
Ronit: I really don‘t know man and frankly I don‘t care.
Ignorance is in fact, bliss!
The Bitch: So now what, even more mindless soaps or is it going to be the usual escape to direction?
Ronit: I am working on quite a few scripts and let‘s see which one materialises. As far as direction is concerned, it is certainly not a possibility.
Finally, someone realises that direction is not every Tom, Dick and Harry‘s cup of tea!
